Running with a Purpose
Kerry, Lawrie was on a special mission
at this year’s Glasgow Half Marathon – she was raising
money for MABS Murcia/Mar Menor, in memory of her dad, Ronnie, who
sadly lost his battle with cancer in June this year. Ronnie had been
a Fireman with the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service for
32 years and it was always his dream to retire to Spain, because he
was never really a fan of the ‘dreich’ Scottish weather.
He enjoyed playing golf and cycling and moved to Los Urrutias, on
the Mar
Menor,
in April 2006, with his wife, Moira. He was a very brave man and embraced
whatever challenge he was faced with in life, but he was unable to
overcome the biggest challenge of all when he contracted cancer. MABS
was there to support Ronnie and Moira through the whole thing. Glasgow
hosted its 28th Half Marathon this year, starting in George Square,
in the city centre, following a route over the Kingston Bridge, into
Bellahouston Park, on to Pollock Park and finishing on Glasgow Green.
With a lot of sponsorship riding on it, and despite the customary
rain, Kerry and friend Hilary Smith trained hard, determined to get
to the end. “It was a hard slog” said Kerry “and
I thought Dad would have mustered up a little sunshine for me, but
he obviously felt I should be challenged!” There were 25,000
entrants this year and the support along the route was immense, considering
the weather, which boosted Kerry’s and Hilary’s determination
to finish the race. Sponsorship money is still coming in, but is thought
to be in excess of €300 – extremely generous from friends
and family in Scotland. Ronnie’s family and friends have already
been very kind with onations
exceeding €400, so this is a real boost for us.” remarked
Lyn Baines, Group Co-ordinator. “Since her epic half marathon,
Kerry hasn’t summoned up the courage to put on her trainers
and go for a run, but she would love to come and take part in the
MABS Race for Life in Los Alcázares on 15 November, and she
will be welcomed with open arms”.
