Some
readers may recall that a short while ago I wrote
explaining that those expats who live in Murcia province do
not need to pay import tax when re-registering their cars due
to the interpretation of the rules in your province. Quite a
few of you responded and have saved thousands of euros. I
must have tempted fate because without warning the loophole
has now been firmly closed. Mind you, changes of rules
without warning has been the norm this year. There have been
at least 6 overnight changes with more bureaucracy added and
sometimes removed! Although we work hand in hand with a
specialist firm of Spanish lawyers it can be quite challenging
keeping abreast. I guess anyone who makes a living by
facilitating processes with the Spanish authorities must
suffer the same headaches.
So what
happens now? Along with owners of foreign plated vehicles
throughout the rest of Spain, the following rules apply as
they did elsewhere from January 1st
2008. Any foreign plated vehicle that is kept in Spain for
more than 6months
in any 12-month period
must be re-registered. Import tax (or matriculation fee as it
is more properly known) is payable unless you can meet the
following criteria
1/ The
vehicle has been owned for more than 6 months and is therefore
classed as your personal vehicle
2/ It is
re-registered within 2 months of arriving in Spain. Note
however that the date of your arrival is taken to be the date
you APPLY for your FIRST Padron, even if you have been here
much longer
3/ You
obtain a Baja Consular from your Consulate. The British
consulate along with most others is in Alicante City
If you do
not meet the above criteria, import tax is now payable. The
tax is based upon the Spanish tax office valuation of your car
and its CO2 emissions. The higher the emissions, the higher
the tax. Sounds complicated? Well I guess it can be, but
after 4 years of continuous service to expats, we make it as
easy as possible, so here is an offer to all readers of this
magazine. Send us full details of your car and we will
calculate the import tax that my be payable without obligation.
Should you wish to re-register your car, and you qualify not
to pay import tax, we will also take you to your Consulate in
Alicante at no extra cost. If you would like to know more,
